Event Guide

We are the longest established, largest event tech company in the UK

A unique blend of innovative techies, project managers and facilitators – we’ve pioneered live event interactive audience response.

Together we’ve supported every type of conference, meeting, event, forum, seminar and symposium. We’ve worked with many of the FTSE100 and Fortune 500 from global corporations to local governments and event management companies to small charities.

Since 1990, we’ve made sure that wherever people come to learn, share new ideas, network and collaborate, we’re on hand to ensure they can do it as easily as possible with the latest interactive technologies and custom-made apps.

Why support is more important than features

Over the past few years, the number of event app providers in the meeting space has risen dramatically. For some meeting owners and production companies, it’s tempting to take an off-the-shelf low-cost app and publish it in the app store for delegates to download.

But delegates are a particular breed. They haven’t chosen the app; it’s been put upon them, and chances are they won’t even get around to downloading it before the conference. So when your event starts, you’ll have large numbers of inexpert users all arriving at the same time expecting their app to work immediately.

This is why we think supporting the app, integrating it into the event and helping your delegates become familiar with the technology is actually more important than the specific features of the app. Crystal Interactive is now launching its fourth hardware platform and fifth software platform since 2000. So we know what it takes to turn something from a software theory to an operational reality that delegates actually want to use.

Chris Elmitt
Managing Director

Chris has been Crystal Interactive's MD since July 2006, and in that time has seen the evolution of the company from family business in the backwaters of Surrey to the dynamic, internationally-reputed company it is today.

With a career in teaching and facilitation prior to joining the company, Chris is constantly exploring ways that Crystal technology can help create a better conversation in a meeting.

When he is not marvelling at the latest technical developments at Crystal, Chris facilitates a number of international conferences and is a regular speaker on the topic of audience engagement.

Most memorable moment: following Boris Johnson on stage at a conference and dismantling his claim that London had more Michelin stars than Paris!

Dom Honey
Director

A founder member of Crystal Interactive, Dom has helped pioneer text based audience response systems for large groups since its earliest days.

Dom leads the team dedicated to delivering outstanding event technology to the live and hybrid event industry. Much of his effort and experience is currently being poured into the features and design of our brand new event app software and the recruitment drive to support the increased demand for our services.

Most memorable event: Watching Crystal support a live event for 200 people, broadcast to over 3,000 staff at 40 plus sites across EMEA and seeing the delegates' votes, questions and feedback submitted in real time from delegate own smartphones, and even some Blackberries.

Neil Jones
Non Executive Director

With a CV charting 20 years working at the sharp end of some of the largest and most successful organisations in the events industry Neil is our appointed Minister in charge of growing up. While the team stays focused on delivering groundbreaking apps at some of the largest conferences in the world, Neil looks for the next big opportunity, a different client approach or market shift.

His unparalleled experience in all forms of live communication - including conferences, educational and training events, motivational meetings, product launches and executive forums allows him to constantly explore how our mastery of technology could make a difference to all forms of meeting.

Most memorable moment onsite: The entire delegation came down with instant and violent food poisoning, and the CEO demanded everyone make themselves sick immediately!

Nick Leigh
Head of Technology

After a ten-year courtship, Nick and Crystal finally tied the knot in 2013 with Nick joining as full-time Head of Technology.

Now leading a team of six, Nick ensures that however big or small, every app that ships from Crystal has the Leigh seal of approval and, as our clients dream up ever more sophisticated and ambitious things to do with technology in events, we can't see Nick being bored or idle any time soon!

Most memorable event: A recent event for a telecoms company - so a tough audience to use an app with... There were 800 delegates all using their own devices at the same time but it went off without a hitch!

Meeta Tailor
Project Director

One of three staff to celebrate 10 years on the Crystal payroll in 2013, Meeta has deployed every generation of technology we have ever developed. She has also liaised with every kind of client on every kind of project and is keenly aware of the pressures our client teams are under to deliver on the big day.

Little wonder then that as project director Meeta now oversees all large-scale projects ensuring we are delivering the right level of expertise, are relentlessly focused on getting the detail nailed on time and ultimately on keeping the promises we make to our clients.

Most memorable event: An event for a pharma company, 600 people, 600 iPads, an app that included lots of content, personalised agendas, interaction, etc, that needed to work across several breakout areas through a secure network. All successfully delivered!

Lindsay Powles
Account Manager

Lindsay's journey to her current role, leading the team that looks after inbound enquiries was not the most obvious one. We first met her when she worked as a recruitment consultant trying to find us a logistics coordinator. She liked the sound of the job so much, she applied herself and we quickly snapped her up!

In 2010 she moved on to a sales role and, recently promoted to account manager, will now help you make sense of apps, iPads and the latest technology trends in a plain-English, knowledgeable and non-pushy style.

Favourite event venue: The Orbit Lounge Bar, Sydney. It's on the 47th Floor of Australia Square and the views are amazing.

Roylan Bonayon
Account Executive

Roylan joined Crystal from Nutricentre where he was charged with turning around client satisfaction in one of the company's most complex and demanding accounts.

With his relentless enthusiasm, his desire to find the best outcome for his clients and his sponge like ability to learn about a new sector, Nutricentre's loss is our gain. He is a perfect fit in his new role as account executive, covering all our keypad enquiries.

Most memorable moment onsite: An event for a Telecoms company - one of their tasks was a group exercise competing to make the biggest, most stylish looking bridge.. using Lego pieces. I was sitting on the side thinking, I want to have a go...

Lee Borrett
Equipment Manager

Charged with planning, maintaining and shipping all Crystal's kit, Lee looks after more apples than an orchard manager.

Lee ensures that our kit is delivered in the highest standards of preparation, and working with our freight partners ensures it arrives to some of the most inaccessible destinations on earth (and venues outside central London) on time and on budget.

Most memorable moment onsite: A conference in Leeds for a clothing retailer. Lights, booming Techno soundtrack, Dancers. Quite the experience.

Phil Craxford
Technical Manager

Hugely experienced with over 20 years in the events industry, Phil came to Crystal following a stint operating the then cutting-edge Watch Out system. Before that, he enjoyed a successful career in theatre.

As well as delivering flawless events in some of the most high-profile situations, Phil is constantly scanning the horizon for new technical innovations to bring to the Crystal stable.

Most memorable event: A small workshop in San Francisco with Robert Redford's Sundance organization.

John Phelan
Financial Controller

Keeping track of over 300 events a year, John is responsible for the systems and procedures that support the finance, sales and marketing operations at Crystal.

His background in finance for the travel and facilities management industries, has given him the commercial awareness to manage the daily finances of the company and develop excellent relationships with our clients and suppliers. His gently persuasive manner and Irish charm even has our MD submitting his expenses almost on time.

Favourite conference city: Tokyo - vibrant, crowded, visually spectacular

Ed Pleasants
Technical Manager

For anyone who doubts that temping is a great way to new opportunities, Ed is living proof. Arriving for a two-week stint of data-entry, Ed has risen through the ranks to become our senior full-time technical manager chalking up a string of high-profile and highly satisfied clients along the way.

An innovation junkie, Ed loves new technology and is quickly able to get under the bonnet of all our new developments. If you're evaluating a new laptop, tablet or smartphone, ask Ed as he's probably already tried it, hacked it and ready to give you the low down!

Favourite conference city: Berlin (Good beer and a great city!)

Stephen Singh
Technical Manager

Admired by many of our clients as a consummate multi-tasker, Stephen always thinks about the whole picture when onsite: "What does my client need to successfully deliver their conference?" rather than "What have I been paid to do?"

His speed and dexterity make him an invaluable team-member onsite.

Favourite conference city: London (it's such a great city!)

Kalle Singh
Technical Manager

When not onsite with Crystal, Kalle fixes bugs for large software companies.

That should tell you all you need to know about him: he's at ease with the most complicated technical situations and shows single minded determination in getting problems ironed out.

Most unlikely venue experience: In the middle of the desert surrounded by tanks!

A qualified teacher, Chris Elmitt has accumulated 12 years' experience deploying his classroom management skills in the commercial world. Chris is a specialist facilitator; initially running workshops within management consultancy firms (such as Cap Gemini Ernst and Young), he now facilitates live and virtual conferences all over the world.

Chris became Managing Director of Crystal Interactive in July 2006, and now leads on major facilitation projects as well as training facilitators in using Crystal's unique blend of event interactivity.

Most memorable moment as facilitator: I was just about to go on stage in front of 700 delegates in Las Vegas when the meeting host asked me to "spin out" my session (from 10 to 30 minutes) because the keynote speaker, on after me, had set up in the wrong conference venue.

Presenter and event designer Ross Edmonds works for top businesses in sectors ranging from travel and pharmaceuticals, to banking and telecoms. He creates a dynamic environment for participants, enabling speakers and delegates to engage with each other through team activities, interviews and panel discussions.

In facilitation, Ross's style is to bring involvement, enjoyment and often a sense of humour to serious business issues.

Favourite event venue: Sheepdrove, Lambourn. A fab place! You drive up a road that goes only to the farm and Sheepdrove high up on the Ridgeway. It's a small conference venue and quite unique. I only tell certain people about it!

Jane Creasy supports private, public, and third sector organisations on leadership and creativity. A leadership coach, she designs and facilitates conferences, seminars and leadership development programmes.

Her background lies in the educational field - at school and national level. Jane was the Head of a large comprehensive school for ten years and a director of the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) for five.

Favourite conference city: It's got to be Sydney; the conference facilities around Darling Harbour are great, and the rest of the city....Well!

Specialising in business and finance, Nadine chairs and facilitates conferences and live events including senior management and sales conferences, product launches, award ceremonies, consumer and trade shows.

Nadine has presented for CNN, Simply Money, BBC, Sky TV, SABC and Summit TV. While she was London Markets Correspondent for the Financial Times, she won "Financial Journalist of the Year."

Most unlikely meeting venue: The British Library, why didn't anyone tell me about it before? Truly inspiring, sociable, great cakes! One of London's best kept secrets, until now!

Specialising in the public sector and pharmaceutical industries, Paul Edwards has worked with Crystal Interactive since 2008, designing and delivering content for, amongst others, the NHS Executive, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, The Co-op and The National College for Schools and Leadership.

Paul is also an associate at the University of Central Lancashire, where he delivers programmes on professional development, change management, governance and finance.

Most memorable event: Being involved in an event for one of the largest children's development organizations in the world: an important and moving conference that will make a difference to so many people.

Denise has been helping large organisations to develop their leaders and facilitating workshops for many years.

She's undertaken European and transatlantic assignments, as well as long-term projects with large global organisations in the UK such as T-Mobile; British Airways and Swarovski UK. Her facilitation style is comfortable, balanced and intuitive; providing practical, fun and informal sessions to help participants deal with the challenging issues before them.

Most unlikely meeting venue: Buddhist Centre West London

Adding a wealth of live TV and radio experience to her acting background, Siân Jones has facilitated UK and European based conferences for organisations including Eon, Novartis, AstraZeneca and the British Chamber of Commerce.

She is highly adaptable to any number of requirements; from celebrating companies' successes, updating, inspiring or motivating audiences, stimulating panel debates, interviewing industry specialists or fronting large-scale conferences.

Pet hate at conferences: Presenters who run over their allocated time slot and ramble!

Experienced consultant, facilitator and trainer, working with public service organisations, Mary Tetlow's career has included roles at the British Council and the Office for Public Management. She was Executive Director of the Public Management Foundation and Principal Adviser in the Prime Minister's Office for Public Services Reform at the Cabinet Office from 2003-2006.

Mary's specialist expertise is in change management and customer insight.

Most unlikely meeting venue: Headquarters of the former secret police in Prague.
